Young Professionals event caters to moms, sons

The rooms and hallways of Southwestern Michigan College’s Student Activity Center were chock full of tiny superheroes Saturday, as the Young Professionals of Greater Dowagiac hosted its first ever “Mommy and Me” event.

Because the event catered to young boys, the Young Professionals strayed away from the typical dress-up dance event like the Daddy Daughter Dance the group hosts in the winter. Rather than the typical shirt, tie or dress, guests young and old were invited to don new personas entirely and dress up as their favorite comic book heroes. The more than 200 people in attendance had the opportunity to get their pictures taken as a keepsake to remember the special family night.

In addition to the photo booth, guests were treated to a live reptile demonstration by Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary. Children also had a chance to make their own superhero masks and to check out a fire engine from the local fire department.

According to members of the group, more than 250 tickets were sold for the event. Proceeds will go toward the Young Professionals’ annual Fourth of July fireworks display.
