Starfish Story: Sister Lakes lunch aides Madge Merrill and Cindy Checkley

Published 9:55 am Tuesday, May 24, 2016

I would like you to meet Mrs. Madge Merrill, and Mrs. Cindy Checkley, lunch aides at Sister Lakes Elementary School.

What one has to understand is this is not a fun position. Lunch aides help to cover the lunchroom when students are eating and supervise the playground. This time can be very difficult as many students can be very busy during this part of their day.

We at Sister Lakes, however, are very fortunate to have such two wonderful adults such as Madge and Cindy.

They make this a fun time. They enjoy being around children. Their energy is high and students love to interact with them on a daily basis.

Cindy is from Dowagiac and worked for the Heddon Lures Company and for Dana Corporation. She is now retired and works 11 hours a week at Sister Lakes Elementary. She has one daughter and two grandchildren, who next year will both attend our school. She enjoys her family, and married her husband Don in 1976.

Madge grew up in the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph area. She loves to work on her lawn, do puzzles and shop. She married her husband, Richard, in 1960, and they have two children. She also lived in Alaska for three years and was a custodian while living there.

The staff and students are lucky to have these two wonderful ladies who care and have their best interest in mind. Thank you for all you do.
