Math/Science Department Chairman Dr. Keith Howell was awarded his 20-year service pin from Trustee Beth Cripe. Despite two decades at SMC, Howell, of Mishawaka, Indiana, taught at numerous other colleges, including Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he added his master’s and Ph.D.; and Bennington College, Northlands Job Corps Center, Champlain College, Community College of Vermont and Middlebury College, all in Vermont. Trustee Dr. Heidi Grabemeyer-Layman presented a five-year service pin to Director of Development Eileen Toney, SMC Foundation executive director, at the May 16 Board of Trustees meeting on the Dowagiac campus. Toney, of Cassopolis, is an SMC alumna with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bethel College. Besides her MBA, Toney is also a University of Wisconsin School of Banking graduate. Vice President of Instruction Dr. David Fleming of Edwardsburg received his five-year service pin from Trustee Todd Obren. Fleming, who holds a doctorate in English from Indiana University, earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English from West Virginia University. He taught literature, composition, humanities and speech for 10 years at Detroit College and Davenport University. He was English chair, executive director of faculty development and assessment, vice president for academic services and provost for Davenport. Susan Wandel of Bridgman accepted a 15-year service pin from Southwestern Michigan College Trustee William M. White. She started at the college as coordinator of community service programs and currently is Excel retention specialist.
