Niles teen injured in crash involving semi

A Niles teenager was injured when the vehicle he was driving disregarded a stop sign and was hit by a semi truck on M-60 in Cass County Monday evening.

Tobin Michael-Ray Weldy, 18, was traveling west on Hospital Street when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Hospital Street and M-60 at approximately 10:12 p.m., according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Weldy’s vehicle was struck by a semi that was traveling south on M-60 driven by John Lietzen, of Forreston, Illinois.

Weldy was checked by Edwardsburg Ambulance on the scene and transported by his father to St. Joseph Hospital for injuries.

Lietzen did not sustain any injuries during the crash.

Seatbelts were worn during this crash and alcohol and substance abuse is unknown at this time.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Edwardsburg Ambulance, Cassopolis Fire Department and Michigan State Police.
