Now in its 18th year, the Dowagiac Elks Club Junior Golf Program is looking for participants.

The program will get underway June 13 at the Dowagiac Elks Golf Course. Sign up sheets are now available at the course or you can call 782-3889 for more information. It is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 14.

Cost is $50 per golfer. The program runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Monday through the end of July.

This program teaches basic golf shots, golf rules, and golf etiquette.

“If you want to learn the game of golf for recreation or have aspirations of playing on a high golf team, this is the place to start,” organizer Dick Morey said. “Most of the Dowagiac Union High School golf team members got their start in this program.”

There are a limited number of junior golf club sets available for beginners to use and a limited number of program scholarships available. Contact Morey for more information about the program, clubs and scholarships at 424-5863.

At the end of the program, there is a tournament with medals given to age group winners and an awards luncheon. All Participants also receive a framed certificate.

The program was originally started by former Dowagiac Mayor James Burke and Audrey Atkinson.
