Cass County COA to offer CarFit program

Published 9:53 am Monday, May 16, 2016

The Cass County COA will host CarFit from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 24.

This free, interactive, and educational program teaches participants how to make their personal vehicle “fit” them to increase safety and mobility when they hit the road.

During the program, each participant learns about 12 key areas of fit, such as adequate space from the steering wheel and properly adjusted head restraints. Additionally, participants learn how to use and adjust their safety devices.

This is not a driving test or mechanical inspection.

The number of older drivers is increasing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2030, an estimated 1 in 5 people will be age 65 or older. In many communities, this translates to 1 in 4 drivers.

Research findings suggest that seniors are among the safest drivers; they are more likely to wear seat belts and abide by the speed limit, and they are less likely to drink and drive. However, as they age, their risk of serious injury or death in an accident increases due to greater fragility.

CarFit keeps older drivers comfortable and safe by helping them find the perfect “fit” and make the most of vehicle safety features.

CarFit is an educational program developed by AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Appointments will take place at the Cass County COA Lowe Center, 60525 Decatur Road, Cassopolis. Each appointment takes about 20 minutes.
