LANSING — Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officers will join their counterparts from across the country in a two-week initiative led by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that focuses on ensuring passenger bus safety and compliance.

From May 15 to May 28, 2016, MSP motor carrier officers will promote safety and security on the roads by inspecting motor coaches for overall vehicle maintenance, including the conditions of brakes, tires and exhaust systems. Officers will also verify driver qualifications and compliance with hours-of-service requirements.

Companies found violating safety regulations risk being put out-of-service.

“This initiative is an example of the strong partnership and commitment of law enforcement agencies across the country to improve traffic safety,” said Capt. Michael Krumm, commander of the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED).

In addition to enforcement, the MSP CVED is encouraging Michiganders to download the FMCSA’s SaferBus mobile app that provides riders with a quick and free way to review a company’s safety record before buying a ticket or booking group travel.
