Laura “Barrie” Carroll, 77, of South Bend, passed away peacefully, at her residence in South Bend, on Sunday afternoon, May 8, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1938, in Brunswick, Georgia to the late William R. and Rosina E. (Harris) Smith.

Barrie graduated from high school and furthered her education at Famous Artists School. On May 24, 1959, she wed Joseph “Les” Carroll at a ceremony in Smyrna, Georgia.

Barrie was an extraordinary woman. In the 1960’s, she worked for Lockheed Corporation as a drafts woman, participating in creating the mechanical renderings for the C5A aircraft. She took a break in the ‘70s and ‘80s to raise her own four kids, as well as to be mom to a number of foster children. In the 1990s she worked at Holy Cross House at Notre Dame, caring for many retired priests.

Barrie was a gifted artist, phenomenal wood carver, amazing seamstress, and wonderful baker. She loved nature and adored her critters.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, David H. and Julian L. Smith.

Surviving Barrie are her beloved husband Joseph Carroll of South Bend, children; Lisa (Bob) Croteau of Niles, Joe (Patty) Carroll of Granger, David Carroll of Sherman Oaks, California and Rob Carroll of South Bend, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a brother Roy (Susan) Smith of Powder Springs, Georgia.

Barrie’s family will gather to remember her privately and ask memorial contributions be directed to the American Cancer Society. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last illness.
