Comic Con returns to Niles library Saturday

Heading into its third year, the Niles District Library’s Comic Con event is becoming one of the library’s largest programs of the year.

Between 450 and 500 people attended the inaugural celebration of all things comic books, movies and science fiction in 2014. That number jumped to more than 700 last year.

Library employee Brandon Steven said he hopes to see even more people this year.

“I really hope we continue to have success with it,” he said. “My desire is to see it get too big for us to do it here.

“It is a lot different than the huge conventions you see in Chicago or Detroit, but it is still a lot of fun. It’s a place where people get to meet and socialize with others who have similar interests. It also supports our local businesses and people who are interested in the industry.”

Comic Con is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 14, throughout the library.

Steven said there would be a lot to see and do at all hours of the show.

“There is something for everyone,” he said.

Radiant Rogue Games, of Dowagiac, will be offering board games and card games throughout the show.

A costume contest with prizes for different age groups will take place.

About a half dozen private or professional collectors will have their collections on site for sale or trade.

There will also be a handful of cartoonists, comic writers, illustrators, artists and other industry professionals from the Michiana area on hand.

The event will also feature video game tournaments and group discussions on comic books and super heroes.

The video game tournaments start at noon and the games are Super Smash Brothers for the Wii-U and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the Super Nintendo.

Judging for the costume contest is at 5 p.m.
