Dowagiac used a no-hitter by Taylor Hulett and a record-setting home run performance by Megan Soderbloom to sweep visiting Plainwell 10-0 and 15-0 in Wolverine conference softball action Thursday.

For Hulett, it was the third no-hitter of the season.

Soderbloom hit a home run in both games to tie the single season record at Dowagiac with six.

The Chieftains (17-4) got off to a slow start in the opening against Plainwell, but in the fourth inning Dowagiac exploded for five runs and turned a 3-0 contest into a rout.

“Once we settled in and timed up their pitchers, we started hitting the ball hard,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said.

Dowagiac finished with 16 hits in the first game, including Soderbloom’s home run, a triple by Mickie Kiggins and a double by Hulett, who struck out nine and walked just one in earning the victory.

In the nightcap, Soderbloom, who like Hulett is a junior, tossed a one-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Chieftains had another big game at the plate, picking up 13 hits in just three innings.

Kiggins hit her first career home run and Soderbloom connected on her second of the day.

Dowagiac also got doubles from Marissa Dodd and Hulett.

“Mickie Kiggins got her first-ever home run and Megan Soderbloom hit two more to give her six on the year which ties the school’s single season record,” Behnke said. “And Taylor Hulett continues to bring it with another no-hitter.”
