The Berrien County Cancer Service presented its annual business award to the Wolverine Pipe Line Company, which provided much-needed home repairs and maintenance for the family of a Niles man battling cancer last summer.

It was all part of the Berrien County Cancer Service’s “Day of Caring,” which offers support to the families of local cancer patients in partnership with Wolverine Pipe Line Company, of Niles.

The work was done on the home of Mike and Melody Bowers, of Niles. Mike died of cancer nine weeks after the “Day of Caring,” which took place July 10.

Wolverine Pipe Line Company donated more than 96 man hours and provided the following gifts and work for the Bowers:

• Grading, installing a stone driveway

• Poured concrete for a new sidewalk from the home to the garage

• Painted the exterior of the home

• Donated a dehumidifier

• Replaced windows

• Cleaned up the property

Milano’s Pizza of Niles catered the lunch and multiple news outlets covered the event.

“The legacy of love that WPL provided has now allowed Melody to care for her elderly parents in the home she shared with Mike and it was her desire to share in the annual business award presentation to WPL to personally thank them for their gift,” said Renee Reid-Smith, community development liaison for the Berrien County Cancer Service.
