Visiting Buchanan rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to edge Dowagiac 2-1 in non-conference soccer Thursday.

Trailing 1-0 after the Chieftains’ Anne Zebell scored in the 17th minute off a Cali Rank assist, the Bucks tied the match just four minutes into the second half on a goal by Erica Mitchell, who has scored 13 goals in seven games.

The match would remain tied at 1-1 until Dowagiac committed a foul in the box and Buchanan was awarded a penalty kick.

Jasmine Dougherty beat Dowagiac keep Grace Younger for what turned out to be the winning goal.

“A tale of two halves,” Dowagiac coach Ryan Haines said. “The first half we played like we were supposed to. The second half we were a completely different team, which led to costly mistakes including giving up a penalty kick in the box.”

Buchanan coach Katie Coules said he team made some adjustments at halftime, which led to the victory.

“At half when were down 1-0 the girls were struggling to keep their heads up so I knew I needed to remind them of all the great things they were doing and the Chieftains’ weaknesses of covering the corners and our crosses,” she said. “Once I got some fire in my team I knew they would come back strong.”

The Bucks outshot Dowagiac 23-7.

The Chieftains played without three starters due to injury.
