Niles edges Portage Northern in 14 innings

Jake Lalone’s walk-off single off of Michael Lincoln lifted the Niles baseball team to a 5-4 win over Portage Northern in 14 innings Wednesday.

Lalone racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Vikings. He singled in the sixth and 14th innings.

Bryce Lake carried Niles’ offense and pitching in the victory.

Lake reached base four times. He tripled in the sixth inning and singled in the fourth and seventh innings.

Lake worked out of three tough situations on the mound. He pitched six innings and allowed no earned runs on five hits. Lake faced his trickiest spot in the 13th inning.

Lincoln took the loss for Portage Northern. He lasted just 4 2/3 innings, walked two, struck out four and allowed one run.

Portage Northern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Huskies attack began with a single from Andy Barta. A single by Tommy Henry then moved Barta from first to second. Ryan Beadle doubled, scoring Barta and Brady Young.

The scoreboard lit up again for Portage Northern when Sexsmith scored on a groundout by Noah Hecht.

The Vikings scored one run in the fourth inning, and then followed it up with one more in the 14th.

In the fourth, Niles scored on a groundout by Jakob Huffman, bringing home Lake.
