Scoring was at a premium between Dowagiac and visiting Brandywine in a non-conference soccer match Friday night.
The Bobcats got on the board first, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw as the Chieftains were able to get the equalizer in the second half.
Both teams played good defense throughout the match and keepers — Sloan Kangas of Brandywine and Grace Younger of Dowagiac — were up to the challenge when teams were able to get off a shot.
Jaleesa Garner scored in the 19th minute as she used her speed to shake free of the Dowagiac defense and past a diving Younger.
Chieftain freshman Kellyn Daly picked up her sixth goal in six games to tie the match at 1-1 in the 55th minute off an assist by Cali Rank on a corner kick.
Kangas stopped six shots for the Bobcats, while Younger stopped eight shots and now has 60 saves on the season.
“I thought we played well given the fact I was without two starters for most of the game due to injury,” Dowagiac coach Ryan Haines said. “Our defense continues to improve and playing against Garner today was a good test for them to see how we have progressed. We are still trying to find ourselves as a team and we will continue to move people around until something clicks. Freshman midfielder Kellyn Daly and junior goalie Grace Younger continue to play well.”
Brandywine is now 3-2-1 on the year and will host Michigan Lutheran at 5 p.m. today.
Dowagiac is 1-3-2 overall and hosts Berrien Springs at 5 p.m. today.
