After impressing judges at a recent regional dance competition, members of MKSOD’s Positively Dance group will be looking to dazzle another group of spectators Sunday afternoon — their families and neighbors.

The competitive dance team will show off their skills during the group’s annual Spring Showcase, which takes place at 3 p.m. at the Dowagiac Middle School Performing Arts Center. The 17 members of the competitive dance teams will be joined by members of the non-competitive performing team for the show, where audiences will get to see nearly 40 different dance numbers in a variety of styles, said Meredith Marrs, vice president of the dance studio board of directors.

While the members of Positively Dance can often be found performing at various functions throughout the year, the yearly showcase is a special occasion for the members of the dance troupe and their family and fans in the local community, Marrs said.

“While the community gets to see a few numbers during the Christmas parade or during city festivals, this is the first time they will get to see their entire routine for the year,” Marrs said.

The show comes on the heels of Positively Dance’s strong performance at the DanZa regional dance competition in Detroit in March. Competing against teams from all over the Midwest, the local dance troupe performed extremely well, taking home 28 first-place prizes, 11 second-place prizes and one third-place prize, Marrs said.

The team will move on to perform at the DanZa National Finals in Boca Raton, Florida, in July, Marrs said.

In spite of the lack of scorecards in the hands of audiences at Sunday’s show, the performers have been practicing extremely hard to put on an enjoyable event for the hometown crowd, Marrs said.

“The kids live to perform,” she said. “It’s not just about the competition. This is what they love do to, to perform on stage for an audience.”

Tickets for the show cost $10 for adults and $5 for students. They can be purchased at the door the day of show or from any of the MKSOD studios, located in Dowagiac, Niles and Decatur.

“It’s a nice venue, it’s a good group of dancers and it’s entertaining and family friendly,” Marrs said.
