Soccer roundup: Bucks’ Mitchell after school record

Published 6:49 am Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Sophomore Erica Mitchell of Buchanan scored five of the visiting Bucks’ 8-0 in a win over Cassopolis in BCS Athletic Conference soccer Monday.

Mitchell scored the first two goals of the match to help Buchanan open up a 4-0 halftime advantage.

She then scored the final three goals of the match, the last of which ended the match with 5:34 to play due to the mercy rule.

“Erica Mitchell is hungry to beat last year senior Jada Meahl’s record of 20 goals for the season,” Buchanan coach Katie Coules said. “So far she is on the right track.”

Mitchell will continue that pursuit when Buchanan hosts Granger Christian at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Visiting South Haven scored with just 10 minutes remaining to edge Brandywine 1-0 in non-conference soccer Monday.

“Pretty back and forth game,” Brandywine coach Evan Winkler said. “We had some good chances but could not put one in the net. Defense played well, but after a corner kick we couldn’t get the ball cleared out and after three attempts and we miss-hit the ball and they got in and scored.

“Hard fought game but both teams South Haven capitalized on their chance and we did not.”

Brandywine will play its first BCS Athletic Conference division game Wednesday at Comstock.
