The Brandywine girls soccer team bounced back after a tough loss on Monday and blanked Berrien Springs, 8-0, in BCS Athletic Conference Red Division action on Wednesday.

Bridgman rallied to edge the Bobcats, 2-1, on Monday. Brandywine led that game at halftime, 1-0.

“We lost on Monday and the biggest thing is that we didn’t want to have that feeling again,” Brandywine girls soccer coach Evan Winkler said. “We wanted to play aggressively and hard against Berrien Springs.”

Cassie Luczkowski, who recorded her first career hat trick, led Brandywine. All her goals came in the first half with the final one coming with 1:20 left.

The Bobcats went into halftime with a commanding 5-0 lead.
Despite owning a big lead, Winkler didn’t want his squad to let up on its intensity in the second half.

“In the second half, even though we were up, I told the team at halftime that we needed to take care of business and play our game. I didn’t want us to play selfish or take it easy even though we were up 5-0. It was nice to see us come out and play strong.”

Alexia Martinez and Mia Stella each scored for the second time during the second half and the game ended by mercy-rule after Grace Rydweiski scored with 21:56 remaining.

Berrien Springs played most of the match without its starting goalie Sofia Brenes, who suffered a finger injury less than two minutes into the match. Stembie Dube replaced her and finished with 13 saves in her first career varsity game.

“She did a wonderful job,” Berrien Springs girls soccer coach Bailey Low said about Dube.

Low is leading a Shamrocks girls soccer program that is only in its fifth year of varsity existence.

“I have a majority of freshmen and sophomores,” Low said.
