A cold and snowy weekend gave way to a mild and breezy Monday — perfect weather for playing with pinwheels.

Students with the Pokagon Band Head Start program had a chance to do just that in the early morning.

The children, along with Head Start staff, joined employees with the tribe in planting blue and silver pinwheels out front of the Pokagon Band headquarters. The project is part of the way the tribe is promoting awareness of child abuse issues, as part of Prevent Child Abuse America’s national Child Abuse Awareness Month, which takes place in April.

The whimsical nature of the pinwheel serves as the physical embodiment of the great childhood all children deserve, said Pokagon Band Educational Associate Autumn Laraway.

The decorations will remain out front of the Pokagon governmental grounds through the end of the month.
