Icy roads and speed were factors in a pair of accidents that occurred on U.S. 12 near Bond Street in Niles Township over the weekend, including a vehicle that hit a fire truck.

The accident happened at approximately 9:25 p.m. Saturday when a four-door Mercury lost control while traveling east on an icy U.S. 12 bridge where it crosses the St. Joseph River, according to a report from the Michigan State Police Niles Post.

The Mercury crossed over the centerline and was hit by an Acura that was headed west on U.S. 12. Two of the occupants in the Mercury were injured and entrapped in the vehicle.

While emergency workers were attempting to extricate the two passengers in the Mercury, another eastbound vehicle — a Ford Mustang — lost control on the icy bridge.

The Mustang struck a Niles Township Fire Department truck that was protecting the scene and then struck the Mercury that at the time was surrounded by emergency personnel.

The two patients remained inside the vehicle. A deputy, paramedic and an off-duty nurse assisting at the scene sustained minor injuries from the secondary crash.

All occupants of the Mercury were transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Chief Gary Brovold, of Niles Township Fire Department, said damage to the fire truck was not severe and that the vehicle remains in use.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in either of the crashes, according to police. However, the police report said driving too fast for the icy conditions was a factor in both crashes.

The report said the driver of the Mustang had no license and charges are being reviewed by the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office.
