Some additional roadways may see some TLC this season due to a lower than anticipated price tag for the annual Dowagiac repaving project.

Dowagiac City Council approved a contract with Paw Paw’s Michigan Paving & Materials Inc. to perform $73,746 worth of annual repaving work to nearly a dozen streets during the council’s meeting Monday at city hall. The roads slated for repair this upcoming year include:

• Center Street, from West Street to Spruce Street

• Green Street, from W. Wayne Street to W. Telegraph Street

• Helena Street, mid-block to E. Prairie Ronde Street

• Marcellus Highway, from Nubour Street east to City Limits

• Marion Street, from Wooden Avenue to S. Paul Street

• Paris Avenue, from Second Avenue to Third Avenue

• Second Avenue, from Paris Avenue east 50 feet

• Singer Street, from Marion Street to Wolf Street

• Third Avenue, from Paris Avenue to Henry Street

• Walnut Street, from Main Street to W. High Street

The city also plans on doing some repair work to a number of manholes and utility poles, though this work is not included in the contract with Michigan Paving, said City Manager Kevin Anderson.

The Paw Paw vendor was the lowest of the four contractors that recently bid on the project, coming in a little less than $10,000 lower than the second-lowest bid, submitted by Galesburg’s J. Allen & Co. Inc.

“We’ve had Michigan Paving here two of the last three years, and they’ve done some good work,” Anderson said.

The city normally sets aside around $125,000 every year to have some repaving and other road repair work performed. Due to a reduction of oil and material cost, the expected price tag for the repairs to the slated amount of roads this year came in lower than the budgeted funds, which will allow the city to expand the scope of work, Anderson said.

“You’ll see us come back with some recommendations on some additional streets,” he said.

Other business conducted by council Monday included:

• Passage of a resolution to abate a public nuisance property, located at 118 Clyborn St.

• Approval of a contract with Kalamazoo’s Republic Services/Reliable Disposal to perform removal work during the city’s upcoming Spring Clean-up Week, scheduled for April 25-29.

• Payment of outstanding bills and payroll, in the amount of $382,989.97.
