Library Writing Contest

The Niles District Library 2016 Writing Contest has begun.

There are four different categories:

• Youth — Ages 12 and under: 1,001-5,000 words

• Teens — Ages 13 through 17: 1,001-5,000 words

• Adults — Ages 18 and up: 1,001-10,000 words

• Miniature literature — Any age: 1,000 words or less

These submissions can be turned in physically or electronically. Physical submissions can be turned in at the Information Desk and electronic submissions can be sent to laura.hollister@nileslibrary.net.

Each participant can submit multiple submissions, but each must be accompanied by a cover sheet, which can be downloaded from the library’s website or picked up at the information desk.

Submissions may be a chapter or two from a longer work or a full story. Submissions are being accepted through April 2, and awards will be given out on April 23.

• March Madness hits Niles District Library

Brackets may be picked up at the Information Desk starting Monday, March 14, and must be returned no later than Wednesday, March 16. There are only 20 spots available. Prizes for best bracket.

 

Tuesday, March 15

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)

The Connection is a one-stop shop for help when housing is threatened or for referrals and information. Representatives will be at Niles District Library on the second and third Tuesdays of every month. Lunch break is noon to 1 p.m. For questions or information, contact Stephanie at (269) 277-5055.

• 10 a.m. — My Plate 101 presented by Lakeland Health

This class will help participants understand the importance of proper nutrition. Learn how to read labels and how to avoid portion distortion. Also learn tips for making a great plate and eating better on a budget.

• 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Artful Relaxation

Artistic pursuits can be very relaxing and rewarding. Join in the classroom downstairs for some soft music, light refreshments and conversation. The primary offering is coloring pages and tools, but people are free to explore other artistic outlets occasionally. If someone has a skill or hobby, they are encouraged to share.

• 4 to 6 p.m. — The Writing Group

The Writing Group is a place for passionate writers to share their ideas and experiences with writing of all types with other passionate writers. All participants will have a chance to share their work and receive constructive criticism and tips for their writing.

• 4:30 to 7 p.m. — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

If you made less than $54,000 in 2015 and need assistance in preparing your basic tax return, schedule a VITA appointment by calling United Way at 2-1-1. Volunteers will be at Niles District Library every Tuesday evening during tax season.

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Niles New Tech Speech Showcase

Niles New Tech 10th grade students will give speeches on change and hardships.

• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

Chips and Chapters is a fun, new read-aloud story time. Eat chips and follow along as Tara reads aloud from a chapter book each Tuesday.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Lego Free Play

The library has Legos for everyone to build with.

Wednesday, March 16

• Storytime canceled today while new carpet is being installed in the Youth Services Department

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Job Fair

Meet with employers recruiting for a wide variety of positions. Are you an employer with open positions? • 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Readers Circle Book Group

Led by Sally Ginter, Readers Circle members have enlightening and thought-provoking conversations about books from a wide variety of genres. This is said to be the perfect place for serious book lovers. New members are welcome. Books are available at the info desk. This month’s book is “Lila” by Marilynne Robinson.

• Library Closed for Staff Development Day

 

Friday, March 18

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

Bring yarn or a sewing project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while chatting and working. Rookies are welcome and there is a teacher and a few loaner tools to get people started.

 

Saturday, March 19

• 10 a.m. to noon — Chess Tournament
