Two people were injured in a motorcycle versus car accident on M-51 in Dowagiac Friday afternoon, according to a release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, Cass County dispatch received a call around 2:10 p.m. reporting that a traffic accident had occurred at the intersection of M-51 and Peavine Street, outside the city limits in Pokagon Township.

The crash occurred when a Jeep Cherokee, driven by 16-year-old Alexis Chorba, of Dowagiac pulled out into intersection after failing to notice that a southbound motorcycle, driven by 34-year-old Troy Duis, of Niles, was approaching.

As a result, Duis could not evade the other vehicle and collided with the jeep.

Duis was airlifted by Air Care Ambulance to Memorial Hospital of South Bend, where he is listed in critical but stable condition. Chorba was transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment of minor injuries.

Duis was not wearing a helmet at the time, and it is believed that Chorba was wearing her seatbelt. Alcohol use is unknown at this time.

The accident remains under investigation.

Assisting the sheriff’s office were the Pokagon Township Fire Department, Pride Care Ambulance, Air Care Ambulance, Pokagon Tribal Police Department and Dowagiac City Police Department.
