Authorities say the driver of an automobile has died after being struck by an Amtrak train outside Dowagiac Friday afternoon.

According to police, the accident occurred around 3:45 p.m. at a railroad crossing at the intersection of Pokagon Highway and Baron Lake Road in Pokagon Township. The vehicle was heading eastbound when it swerved around the stop gates, colliding with the oncoming train.

Police say they are unsure if anyone else was in the vehicle.

Amtrak Spokesman Marc Magliari said no passengers or crew members on board the Amtrak train were injured.
