The name of the person killed when a train struck a vehicle Friday afternoon in Pokagon Township has been released by the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Barbara Schult, 66, of Middlebury, was declared dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s department was dispatched to a vehicle/train accident at 3:44 p.m. at the Pokagon Highway crossing in Pokagon Township.

Schult was driving east on Pokagon Highway when, according to witnesses, she passed stationary vehicles and attempted to cross over the railroad tracks while the gates where down and the visual and audible signals were engaged.

Upon seeing the vehicle enter the crossing, train engineer David Morgan, 52, of Battle Creek, engaged the emergency braking mode to stop the train, but was unable to avoid the collision.

Morgan was transported by ambulance to Lakeland hospital in Niles for treatment.

At this time, safety belt and alcohol use is unknown.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department received assistance at the scene by the Dowagiac Police Department, Pokagon Tribal Police, Michigan State Police, Pokagon Township Fire Department and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.

This accident remains under investigation.
