An inmate at the Berrien County Jail was pronounced dead after being found hanging in a single person cell, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
The subject was identified as 24-year-old Martell Dekarlos Hadley, who was recently sentenced to prison for fleeing and eluding police in the fourth degree, according to the sheriff’s department.
“At this point all indications are that it was a suicide and no ‘foul play’ is suspected,” said Capt. Robert Boyce, of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
Jail staff found Hadley, of Benton Harbor, at 10:16 p.m. Saturday and immediately began life saving measures that included CPR and the use of an AED. Medic 1 Ambulance personnel responded and provided more advance life saving measures and transported the inmate to Lakeland Medical Center’s Emergency Room. The inmate was pronounce dead there.
Detectives were called in to investigate this incident. A copy of their report will be sent to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review upon completion.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday in Grand Rapids.
