Fire department responds to fire at High Street residence

Monday, the Dowagiac Fire Department responded to a report of a possible house fire in the 800 block of West High Street in Dowagiac.

The alarm was received by the fire department at 1 p.m. and the first engine arrived on scene at 1:04 p.m. and found smoke showing with visible flames from a second floor window.

Fire personnel made an interior attack on the fire and the fire was declared under control at approximately 1:15 p.m.

The fire started in an upstairs bathroom of the residence and fire damage was contained to that room. Other parts of the home suffered some smoke and water damage.

One person was home at the time of the fire and received minor injuries when he was attempting to extinguish the fire prior to the arrival of the fire department. That person was treated by Pride Care Ambulance.

There were no other injuries from this incident. The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Dowagiac Fire Department Fire Investigator.

The Dowagiac Fire Department was assisted on scene by officers of the Dowagiac Police Department and medics from Pride Care Ambulance.
