Robert M. Corwin, 84, of Niles, Michigan died at 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born on December 15, 1931 in Niles to Burley McHatley and Amanda I. Corwin, but his grandparents, Earl and Mabel Corwin and Uncle Bert Corwin were all instrumental in his childhood. He was graduated from Niles High School, and began his career with Bendix Automotive in South Bend, Indiana. He also began serving in the U.S.Army Reserve and the Michigan National Guard, and was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict, returning as Veteran and continuing as a Reservist. After retirement from Bendix, he owned and operated Insulating by Corwin in Niles.

Bob was a member of the American Legion Post #26 in Niles, the Saint Joseph Valley Lodge #4, F. & A.M., and the Niles Shrine Club. When his children were young he volunteered at the Niles Babe Ruth Baseball League and the “Y’s Men” club supporting the activities of the YMCA, and often served as the local Santa Claus. He has always personally been athletic, running track and swimming, and enjoyed Country Music.

On Sept. 14, 1957, in Niles he married the former Constance A. “Connie” Walker with whom he celebrated the 34th anniversary of their wedding prior to her death on June 10, 1992.

Surviving family includes their children, Tamara M. Carter, Pamela (Carl) Weems, and Monte (Norma) Corwin, all of Niles; grandchildren Tegan Gaul, Lynzie (Tom) Moore, Trever Carter, Tyler Weems, Taitum (Jeffrey) Jerue, Alyssa (Brandon) Townsley, and Devin Corwin; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Hunter, Jaelen, Violet, Samuel, and Cameron; and Bob’s sister, Caroline.

The service for Bob Corwin will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles and will begin with Masonic Rites by Saint Joseph Valley Lodge #4, F. A.M.; followed by the Rev. Glen Hoese of Calvary Pentecostal Church in Hartford, Michigan. The service will conclude with the Full Military Rites by the United States Army Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #51 in Buchanan. Entombment will be private in the Mausoleum of Riverview Cemetery in South Bend.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday at the funeral home beginning at 2 p.m. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to Hospice at Home.
