Chili walk returns to Buchanan for 10th year

BUCHANAN — Winter is about to heat up in southwest Michigan — particularly in downtown Buchanan.

The Buchanan Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Buchanan Meadows Meridian Senior Living, is once again gearing up for what organizers say is the best chili walk in the area.

Last year’s event featured more than 30 chili entries, and organizers say the variety was endless, as it wasn’t just 30 pots of traditional chili.

Chefs came up with all kinds of creations made with ground beef, steak, turkey, venison, pumpkin and vegetables.

This year, the chamber wants the event to be even bigger, and encourages chili cookers to turn in their concoctions for a chance to win the coveted Golden Ladle.

On Wednesday, March 9, local businesses and organizations will stand off to see who has the best chili in Buchanan. The public is encouraged to participate in the sampling, and each attendee may cast a vote for their favorite chili and best named chili.

This year, there will be a $2 charge per spoon, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Toys for Tots of Wesners Automotive of Buchanan.

Prizes will be awarded for the Judges’ Choice, People’s Choice and Best-Named Chili.

This year’s chili challenge will fill downtown in progressive fashion, starting and ending with the Buchanan District Library.

Each contestant will be matched up with a local business to showcase both the chili and the place of business. Visitors will have the opportunity go door-to-door sampling chili from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 9.

Those interested in registering for the contest should contact the Buchanan Area Chamber (269) 695-3291 or bacc@buchanan.mi.us) for an application. There is an entry fee of $20. Entrants may sign up through Feb. 29.
