Anthony Wayne “Tony” Evans, age 92, of Vandalia, died peacefully early Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, 2016, in Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph, Michigan in the presence of his family.

He was born Sept. 26, 1923. in Vandalia, Michigan to Homer and Glendora (Vaughn) Evans, the eldest son of eight children. He married Sue Kirk Feb. 10, 1959, in St. Joseph, Michigan. She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Marjorie Green, Leona Brown, Betty Lou Hibschman; and two brothers, Todd Evans and Richard Evans.

Tony served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was passionate about spreading the Gospel, especially through the work of his church, whether teaching Sunday School and playing guitar. Tony’s greatest joy was helping people anywhere at any time. He was crazy about his family, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Tony loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and working on his tractor.

Tony’s children remember their father’s instruction to them, “If you can’t treat others’ children as your own, you don’t have the Spirit of Christ in you.” Above all else, Tony had the Spirit of Christ.

Anthony will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of almost fifty seven years, Sue (Kirk) Evans of Vandalia; three daughters, Charlotte Pompey of Niles, Brenda Evans Singleton of Cassopolis, Susanna Evans Hickman of Vandalia; four sons, Allen Evans of Elkhart, Tony (wife, Sherry) Evans of Battle Creek, Alric (wife, Ferlonda) Evans of Berrien Springs, Mark (fiancé, Beth Shepherd) Evans of Indianapolis; 22 grandchildren;  45 great grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Yvonne (wife, Marilyn) Evans of Vandalia, Bertrand (wife, Sheila) Evans of Cassopolis; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. in Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 North Broadway St., Cassopolis. Mr. Evans will be laid to rest in Oakdale Cemetery in Vandalia, Michigan, when he will be accorded full military honors.
