Niles churches collecting water for Flint residents

The Flint water crisis has become a well-known problem across the whole nation, and Michigan residents all over the mitten have rallied to help those affected.

Two Niles churches were among several organizations to coordinate water bottle drives over the weekend. In a combined effort between Niles’ Relevant Church and Mount Calvary Baptist Church, about 160 cases of water — more than 4,000 bottles — were donated and will be sent to Flint.

Muta Mwenya, lead pastor at Relevant Church, said the outcome of the water drive shows how small churches like Relevant and Mount Calvery can make a big impact.

“Our capacity to help is motivated by opportunity and not limited by our size or resources,” Mwenya said.

Those still wishing to help the cause can drop water off at either church this Sunday. All donations will be sent to Flint following the weekend’s drive.
