Brandywine owns basketball bragging right this year over arch rival Buchanan.

The latest wins came on Friday as the Bobcats escaped with a 53-51 win in the boys game and rolled to a 72-52 win in the girls game.

Earlier this year at Buchanan, the Bobcat boys won, 47-41, and the girls were victorious, 67-47.

Another doubleheader sweep by Brandywine was sealed after Jarrett Thomas’ desperation midcourt shot missed way short of the basket as time expired in the boys contest.

Before that last second heave, Brandywine’s Marquise Davis missed the second of two free throws with 3.7 seconds left and Buchanan grabbed the rebound.

The Bobcats, who improved to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in the B.C.S. Athletic Conference Red Division, survived in a game that featured five ties and eight lead changes.

“The difference in the game was the character in my kids,” Brandywine boys basketball coach Nathan Knapp said. “These kids are mentally tough. They’ve taken enough beatings and they don’t like that feeling. These kids know when it’s gut check time.”

Brandywine won despite shooting only 10-of-22 from the free-throw line. The Bobcats were only 6-of-12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

“At practice we make 9-of-10 and 8-of-10 all the time,” Knapp said.

Brandywine took the lead for good at 50-48 after getting two free throws from Chandler Plew with 1:48 remaining.

Vinny Peel scored 17 points to lead Brandywine. Hunter Slaughter scored 10 of his 11 points in the first quarter. He made three 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Buchanan, which fell to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the B.C.S. Red Division, missed 16 of its 19 shots in the fourth quarter. The Bucks pulled within 52-51 after getting a 3-pointer from Andrew McGuirt with :05.9 left in the game.

“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we can,” said Buchanan boys basketball coach Reid McBeth. “We also had some defensive breakdowns and gave up ways too many offensive rebounds.”

McGuirt scored 15 points on five 3-pointers to lead the Bucks. Dalton Riddle added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Tim McCaffrey totaled 10 points and eight rebounds.

Makenna Hartline was outstanding for Brandywine in the girls game. The 5-10 senior scored 30 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, had six steals and blocked a shot for the hosts.

“That’s what you get from an all-stater in a big game,” Brandywine girls basketball coach Josh Hood said. “That’s why she was first team all-state last year and she’ll be a unanimous selection this year. She really stepped it up, but she’d be the first to tell you that one through nine on our team contributed tonight.”

A three-point play from Hartline gave Brandywine a 29-8 lead with 1:35 left in the second quarter.
The Bobcats shot 60-percent (30-of-50) from the field with many of their points coming in the paint.

“The entire game plan tonight was getting the ball inside,” Hood said. “Our girls were flawless executing against their 1-3-1 defense.”

Buchanan missed 12 of its 16 shots in the first half and turned the ball over 16 times.

“We were able to rotate through every minute, minute and a half and we started wearing them down a little bit,” Hood said. “The tempo was awesome.”

Jaleesa Garner added 15 points and three steals for the Bobcats, who improved to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in the BCS Red Division.

Buchanan, which fell to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in the division, got 20 points from Brooke Wesner and 17 from Jade Mosier.

“I would say in the first half we came out slow and against Brandywine you can’t come out slow,” Buchanan girls basketball coach Gabe Miller said. “We bring out the best in them and it certainly showed tonight. It was a tough go.”
