Dowagiac wins wild game with Paw Paw

In the matter of 37 seconds, Dowagiac’s Wolverine Conference non-divisional boys basketball game went from a close contest to a route.

Leading 49-41 with 3:43 remaining in the contest, Paw Paw’s Nick Klingel picked up his fourth foul. Klingel was also whistled for a technical foul which allowed Harry Reed and Leroy Lewis to connected on three of four free throws to extend the Chieftains’ lead to 52-41. Reed scored on the ensuing inbounds play to make it 54-41 with 3:24 to play.

Reed was followed after a Paw Paw miss and Redskins coach Matt Goodwin was whistled for a pair of technicals and ejected from the contest with 3:06 to play.

Reed stepped to the line and connected on five of six free throws to give Dowagiac a 61-41 advantage.

Paw Paw (5-6) outscored Dowagiac (9-1) 10-4 over the final three minutes to conclude the contest.

The Chieftains grabbed an early 11-3 lead, but were outscored 17-9 in the second quarter as the Redskins knotted the score at 20-20 at the intermission.

Dowagiac tightened the pressure in the third quarter and picked up the tempo of the game, which resulted in numerous Paw Paw turnovers and easy Chieftain baskets.

Dowagiac took a 41-33 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Reed finished with 23 points, which included 10-of-12 from the free throw line and a trio of 3-pointers. Keoante Blackamore added 18 points and Brandon Winchester-Jones 12 points.

Paw Paw was led by Klingel’s 17 points. Luke toliver finished with 12 ansd Trey Brennan 11.
