Athlete Showcase: Niles’ Maya Brookins

Maya Brookins is a senior on the Niles girls basketball team.

 

What has been one of your greatest

accomplishments as an athlete?

MB: Being all-state in track for three years.

What has been one of your biggest

disappointments as an athlete?

MB: Losing in the district finals my sophomore year.

What has been a hardship in your life?

MB: Deciding what college to go to.

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

MB: My mom. She’ll do whatever it takes for my siblings and I.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

MB: Right before tipoff.

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

MB: Going in for a layup and the ball hit off my knee.

How do you tend to workout/train when by yourself?

MB: A lot of running.

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

MB: Soccer or softball.

Who would you say is your “biggest fan?” Why?

MB: My mom. She always encourages me to follow my dreams.

How would you give away $50,000?

MB: A big portion to charity and the other half to my mom.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

MB: Golden State Warriors.

If I did not play sports, I would…?

MB: Catch up on some sleep.

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

MB: Keep my energy up and keep a positive attitude.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

MB: How aggressive you could be.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

MB: That I’m a hard worker.

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

MB: Watch “Evil Dead” by myself. Not very happy that I did that.

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

MB: Either drawing or singing. It makes me relax.
