Dowagiac man arrested in stabbing incident

A Dowagiac man is in custody following a stabbing incident that occurred late Tuesday night, according to a release from the Dowagiac Police Department.

According to police, officers with the department responded to a reported stabbing at the 200 block of Jefferson Street around 11:48 p.m. When they arrived, they saw a 48-year-old man attempting to flee the scene of the crime, who police detained and took into custody.

Upon entering the residence, officers spoke to the female victim, a 39-year-old Dowagiac woman, who had sustained multiple injuries. Police discovered that the arrested suspect and the victim were in a domestic relationship with one another, and were in the midst of an argument when the suspect reportedly grabbed a weapon and stabbed the victim.

The woman was transported via Pride Care ambulance to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment, where she was listed in stable condition.

The suspect was transported to Cass County Jail, where he is being held on suspicions of attempted murder. His name is being withheld pending his arraignment in Cass County District Court.

Dowagiac officers were assisted by Pokagon Band Tribal Police, Michigan State Police and Pride Care EMS.
