Edwardsburg’s football team was close to being perfect on offense in Friday’s 58-19 thrashing of Plainwell in Wolverine Conference action.

The 10th-ranked (Division 3) Eddies, who improved to 7-0, scored touchdowns on seven of their nine possessions. The Eddies were a few yards short of going 9-for-9 into the end zone. At the end of the first half, the hosts quickly drove to Plainwell’s five-yard line before time ran out in the second quarter. The game ended with Edwardsburg taking a knee at the Trojans’ five-yard line.

“They tried to take away the inside trap early in the game so we decided to keep things wide,” said Edwardsburg football coach Kevin Bartz, whose team has now outscored its opponents this year, 326 to 83. “Once things got loosened up then our inside trap started going for big yards. Eventually, we started wearing them down up front. I’m really pleased with what we did offensively.”

Edwardsburg rushed for 445 yards out of its power-T attack. Isaiah Miller led the way with 164 yards rushing on 14 carries with a touchdown. Damion Pompey added 110 yards on the ground on seven carries with two touchdowns. Austin Cline, Dante Razzano and Thor Fifer added touchdown runs for the Eddies.

“There’s a lot of weapons out there,” Bartz said.

Bartz feels his team can improve on defense. Plainwell gained 154 yards and had nine first downs in the first half as Edwardsburg went into halftime with a 28-13 lead.

“Defensively, we weren’t as physical as we would have liked to have been throughout the game,” the Eddies coach said. “We still need to work on that a little bit.”

Edwardsburg did force three turnovers in the second half, which led to 22 points. Razzano had an interception, while Cline and Joey Hess each had a fumble recovery. Cline returned his fumble recovery 17 yards for a touchdown.

The win locked up a share of the Wolverine Conference championship for the Eddies, who travel to Three Rivers Friday night.
