The Dowagiac Elks Junior Golf Program wrapped up another successful season as it held its annual tournament, luncheon and awards ceremony Monday.

There were 90 golfers, volunteers and parents at the 17th annual event held at the Elks Club.

The Junior Golf Program is for boys and girls ages 8 to 14. Many of the young golfers will go on to play at the high school level. During the summer program, they were taught the basics of golf such as grip, stance, alignment, putting and sand shots, as well as golf etiquette and rules.

Beginners are given special instructions and play from 150 yards to the green, while the more advanced golfers played nine holes from the regular tees.

The program was started by former Dowagiac Mayor Dr. James Burke and Audrey Atkinson. The program met once a week on Mondays at the Elks Club Golf Course.
