Documentary film buffs are in for a treat this weekend as two movies make their Michiana debut.

Chikaming Open Lands and Fernwood Botanical Garden have joined together to host an environmental film festival featuring two powerful films, “DamNation” and “More Than Honey.”

“DamNation” will be presented at the Vickers Theatre in Three Oaks at 7 p.m. July 30. The film reveals the ecological cost of two centuries of American dam building, from degraded waterways to the loss of wildlife habitat.

Critics say this powerful film odyssey across America explores the sea change and our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers.

“More Than Honey” will be presented at Fernwood in Niles on Aug. 1 beginning with a reception from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The film will be screened at 7:30 p.m. in the Clark Gallery.

In this documentary, Oscar-nominated director Markus Imhoof (“The Boat is Full”) tackles the vexing issue of why bees worldwide are facing extinction. Throughout the past 15 years, numerous colonies of bees have been decimated throughout the world, but the causes remain unknown. The film investigates this global phenomenon, traveling from California to Switzerland, China and Australia.

Registration is required, as seating is limited for both screenings. Cost is $10 (Fernwood and Chikaming Open Land members $8) per movie or $15 (Fernwood and COL Members $12) for both movies and the Fernwood reception.

Chikaming Open Lands is the local land conservancy dedicated to preserving the open spaces and natural rural character of southwest Berrien County. COL works to protect and restore native plant and animal habitat, improve water quality, and permanently preserve ecologically significant forests, prairies and wetlands, as well as prime farmland and other open spaces in this area. COL serves nine townships in southwest Berrien County, and has been instrumental in preserving 1,573 acres of open space since its founding in 1999.
