LANSING — Sen. John Proos reminds adult Michigan residents that July is Craft Beer Month.

“Michigan craft brewers exemplify our state’s commitment to our agricultural heritage and entrepreneurial spirit — supporting Michigan farmers and employing thousands of workers,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “As a result of hard work and ingenuity, Michigan is regularly mentioned as one of the best beer states, with brewers producing more than 100 types of flavorful craft beers. In addition to promoting Michigan tourism, these local small businesses work within their communities to encourage responsible enjoyment of beer and prevent alcohol abuse and underage drinking.”

The Michigan Senate adopted Senate Resolution 65, co-sponsored by Proos, to designate July 2015 as “Craft Beer Month.” SR 65 states that craft brewers in Michigan support state agriculture by purchasing hops, wheat, beet sugar, cherries, apples, and numerous other fruits, herbs, and vegetables grown in Michigan.

The resolution also commends Michigan craft brewers for providing jobs, improving the balance of trade, supporting Michigan agriculture and educating residents about the history and culture of beer while promoting the responsible consumption of beer as a beverage of moderation.

Proos said that craft beer production in Michigan increased 41.5 percent in 2014, according to the Brewers Association.

“Local craft brewers are playing a growing role in our economy — directly accounting for more than 5,000 jobs and more than $144 million in wages,” Proos said. “Michigan ranks fifth in the nation in the overall number of breweries. Many craft breweries are located here in Southwest Michigan, and I encourage drinking-age residents to discover what’s on tap.”

Residents can find local breweries at www.Michigan.org/breweries. The site features a Brewery Map and List that allows visits to search breweries by city.
