Dowagiac sophomore Megan Soderbloom tossed a perfect game as the Chieftains swept a non-league doubleheader from Bangor on Senior Night.

Soderbloom struck out five and did not walk a batter as the Chieftains took the nightcap 15-0 in five innings.

Dowagiac won the opening game 10-3.

The Chieftains and Vikings nearly did not get to play due to the amount of water on the Dowagiac field at 1 p.m.

“I have to give credit to our AD Brent Nate, Mark Dzackowic and our grounds crew of Roy Freeman and John Juroff for getting our field ready to play,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “At 1 o’clock it didn’t look like we were playing and they worked hard to clear all the water off the field so we could send our seniors out in style for their last home game.”

The Dowagiac seniors did go out in style as Riley Daly was 4-of-7 with three runs scored and four RBIs, while McKenzie Herter was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap.

Dowagiac used back-to-back five-run innings in the third and fourth frames of the opening game to break open the contest against the Vikings.

Marrisa Dodd and Taylor Hulett both doubled and drove in a run, while Soderbloom, Mickie Kiggins, Megan Huey and Hannah Whitaker all had two hits. Huey finished with four RBIs in the first game.

“We started out slot in the first game, but finally started to take better swings and drive the ball the way I know we can and that continued into the second game,” Behnke said.

Hulett was 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBIs, while Alyssa Allen was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Soderbloom was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Dowagiac also got two hits each from Herter, Daly and Kiggins, who drove in three runs.

Dowagiac will face host Niles in the Division 2 district semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m.
