Dowagiac, Brandywine qualify for golf regional

A single stroke separated Division 3 District Golf champion Schoolcraft and host Dowagiac.
The Eagles shot 339 to the Chieftains’ 340 to claim the district title.
Also qualifying were Battle Creek Pennfield 359, Comstock 362, Berrien Springs 367 and Brandywine 376.
For the Bobcats, it was the first time in school history that the team has qualified for the regional tournament.
“It is fantastic,” Brandywine coach Josh Dickeson said. “All day today I tried not to look at the scores and keep my focus forward. To say I was a little nervous at the end was an understatement.”
Senior Alec DeJonge also gave Brandywine its first district medalist as he shot 78 to easily distance the field.
DeJonge shot an even-par 36 on the back nine.
“I feels really good because I have only done it once so far this year,” DeJonge said of winning medalist honors. “It has been quite a struggle this year, but I finally put a good score together today.”
Dowagiac, which was led by Jordan Hagemann’s 82, also got an 85 from Zach Davis, who had five birdies in his round.
“It is a good lesson that every stroke counts,” Chieftain coach Bob Turner said. “They will beat themselves up over the one, but 340 is the best we have shot all year. So their confidence has got to be soaring. We threw out a 93 and our worst score has been a lot higher than that pretty much all year.
“Zach Davis has five birdies. I don’t think he has had five birdies the entire year. I am happy with what we did, but it is bittersweet. I would have been nice to have that championship.”
