Sturgis blanks Dowagiac in Wolverine soccer

Emma Boland and Sarah Miller combined for five goals as visiting Sturgis blanked Dowagiac 8-0 in the opening round of the Wolverine Conference Soccer Tournament.

The Trojans and Chieftains are playing in the consolation bracket of the league tournament.

Boland had a hat trick for Sturgis, which led 5-0 at halftime. Miller scored a pair of goals, including the eight goal in the 70th minute to end the match due to the mercy rule.

Also scoring for the Trojans were Andrea Hernandez, Morgan Paeschel and Mikayla Cary.

Dowagiac was playing without staring goalkeeper Grace Younger, who remains out with an ankle injury.

Alyssa Crocker and Mara Nelson combined for 15 saves.
