Police are describing it as an unusual kind of theft.

Someone stole more than $1,500 worth of frozen food from the Dairy Queen on the west side of Niles at 322 Grant St. earlier this week.

Sgt. Scott Swanson, of the Niles Police Department, said a large quantity of frozen chicken strips, hamburger meat, ice cream cakes and Dilly Bars were taken sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, likely between the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

“It was a food theft. Nothing else was taken,” Swanson said. “That’s what makes it kind of weird.”

The building itself was not entered. Swanson said a freezer outside the fast food restaurant was broken into.

He said it is likely that the theft involved a vehicle and more than one person due to the large quantity of items that were taken.

He is asking for the public’s help in finding the person or persons responsible for the crime.

It is possible, he said, that someone saw a vehicle parked at the Dairy Queen that night or knows someone who now has an unusually large amount of frozen food.

“Our number one priority is figuring out who did it and stopping it because it might happen again,” he said.
