Niles drops pair of close ones to Wildcats

MATTAWAN — Visiting Niles dropped a pair of SMAC non-divisional baseball games to Mattawan Thursday.

The Vikings lost 4-1 in the opening game and 3-2 in the nightcap.

In the opening game, Zach Montague got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He tossed two innings of shutout ball. Montague struck out two, walked none and gave up no hits.

Chris Frantz was the game’s losing pitcher. He lasted six innings, striking out five and allowed four runs.

The Wildcats did not relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the first inning when it scored on two doubles.

Mattawan brought home one run in the second inning, and matched that run total in the third. In the second, the Wildcats scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitchell Dundore, bringing home Sam Miller.

The Vikings managed to score one run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Cody Thornton.

In the nightcap, Niles lost 3-2 despite outhitting Mattawan five to four.

Frantz had two extra-base hits for the Vikings. He doubled in the first and third innings.

Drew Huffman took the loss for Niles. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed one earned run on four hits.

CJ Hunt recorded the win for Mattawan. He pitched two-thirds shutout innings. He struck out two, walked none and surrendered no hits.

Mattawan jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. A double by Lachlan Sawall, scoring Parker Curtis and Brady Neal started the inning off.
