The Niles Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of Maple Street in Niles Thursday afternoon.
Chief Jim Millin, of the Niles Police Department, said a witness saw a black male shoot a couple shots into the air before running away just before 2 p.m.
The shooter, Millin said, was gone before police arrived and remains at large.
Police found shell casings at the scene.
No one was injured.
Area schools were placed in lockdown around the same time of the shooting. Millin said he isn’t certain if the lockdown was put in place because of the shooting or in anticipation of the arrest warrant that was served by Berrien County Sheriff’s Department in the 300 block of N. 9th St. Both occurred within an hour of each other.
He said the two incidents are unrelated.
Anyone with information about the shooting should call the police department at (269) 683-1313.
