Mary Ann Curtis, 88, of Niles, Michigan died at 5:20 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2015, at West Woods of Niles following an extended illness. Her family is grateful to the staff of West Woods and of Hospice for the special level of care given.

She was born on Aug. 1, 1926, in Niles to Rosario “Mike” and Nancy (Merlo) Molica. She graduated from Niles High School, and lived on North Fifth Street all of her life. She was employed at the former Niles plant of Simplicity Pattern Company for forty years.

Mary was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles. She enjoyed working in her yard and gardening. She was an avid friend to animals, keeping humming bird feeders fresh, and caring for her pet cat, “Sophie”. She will be remembered for her love of shopping, and — more importantly — as a compassionate and giving person.

On May 31, 1947 at Saint Mary Catholic Church she married Donald Curtis with whom she celebrated the forty-third anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on June 4, 1990. She was also preceded in death by brothers Philip, Tony, Henry, and Robert Molica and sisters, Joan Imus and Nicki McElroy.

Surviving family includes brothers Frank (Shirley) Molica of Jackson, Michigan, Ben Molica of Jackson, and Alfred (Jacqueline) Molica of Florida, sister Fanny Probst of Niles; and sisters-in-law Betty (Mrs. Tony) Molica, Emily (Mrs. Henry) Molica, and Marlene (Mrs. Robert) Molica, all of Niles; and many nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Ann Curtis will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Saint Mary Catholic Church by the Rev. Alphonse Savarimuthu, MSFS of the parish assisted by Deacon Roger Gregorski. Committal Rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Contributions in memory of Mary Curtis may be made to Saint Mary Catholic Church, or to Pets Alive. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
