The Cassopolis man who authorities discovered on Diamond Island after being reported missing for nearly a week has been charged with home invasion, according to Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz.

Kurt DeYoung, 46, pleaded not guilty on two counts of second-degree home invasion and two counts of larceny in building during his arraignment hearing in Cass County Thursday, held in front of District Court Judge Stacey Rentfrow. Authorities apprehended the accused on Wednesday, following the issuing of a warrant for his capture late Tuesday afternoon.

DeYoung’s charges stem from his disappearance after a fishing excursion on Diamond Lake in Cassopolis on April 8. Authorities spent several days trying to find his location after discovering the boat he was on stranded on the shore of the island.

Police eventually tracked the Cassopolis resident down on April 14, finding him alive and well.

According to the testimony he gave to authorities, DeYoung had drifted ashore to the island after the motor in his boat died. Claiming that his cell phone was dead, the man said he entered one of the residences on the islands, which he claimed had an opened door, in order to get out of the cold. He told police he had no memory of what happened after that.

DeYoung is currently being held in Cass County jail, with bail set at $50,000. Judge Rentfrow also ruled that he couldn’t consume any alcohol should he make bail.

If convicted, DeYoung faces up to 15 years in prison and/or $3,000 in fines. A preliminary hearing is set for May 6.
