Brian Hunt fills in the last quarter mile square to signify the completion of 300 miles of lap swimming.

Hunt completed every lap in the Niles-Buchanan YMCA’s 25-yard pool. There are 70 1/2 lengths in a mile. Hunt began his journey on Dec. 28, 2013. The YMCA has transformed what is usually a very boring, monotonous fitness activity into a challenging fun experience for the participants of the adult lap swims.
There currently are 15 swimmers participating. Hunt’s brother Al is closing in with 284 miles and Bryan Vanlandingham is working on his second hundred miles with 130 miles.
The YMCA offers several fitness opportunities for teenagers and adults that enjoy the water and have an interest in fitness.

At 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, there is a training class for the avid swimmer that participates in triathlons or masters competition. At 7:15 p.m. Wednesday there are swim lessons for those with a desire to learn to swim, learn to relax in the water or have a goal to swim well enough to participate in a triathlon one day.

If swimming to and fro has no appeal, there are 17 other aqua fitness classes throughout the week. They range in intensity from easy to intense and from water relaxation to aqua dance.
