SWET team called to downtown Niles residence
Police were interviewing several people after officers with the Southwest Enforcement Team (SWET) executed a narcotics search warrant at a residence in the 500 block of Sycamore Street in Niles Tuesday afternoon.
Det. Sgt. Christ Suarez, of SWET, said four adults and one juvenile were being questioned by officers.
“At this time it is preliminary, but it looks like there will be charges sought,” Suarez said.
Officers executed the search warrant shortly before 3 p.m. at 524 Sycamore and 524 1/2 Sycamore. Both addresses are located in the same building, which is next to Greater Niles Community Federal Credit Union downtown.
While officers encountered no resistance from occupants, Suarez said a pitbull had to be secured by Berrien County Animal Control.
Officers from the Niles Police Department and the Michigan State Police Niles Post assisted.
Suarez would not say whether or not drugs were found during the search.
“It doesn’t look like it is of big nature, but in a small community these areas and investigations need to be tended to,” he said.
Suarez said an anonymous tip led to an investigation, which led to the search warrant being authorized.
He would not release the names of those being interviewed.
