The Dowagiac softball team reached the 20 win mark with a sweep of host Brandywine Thursday.

The Chieftains (20-7) defeated the Bobcats (17-6) 12-1 in five innings and 13-7.

Sabrina Ruiz scattered five hits to pick up the win in the opening game.

Dowagiac had 13 hits off a Kelly Harper and Morgan Crocker.

Emily Roach had a double for the Chieftains, while Justine Sater had a pair of doubles for the Bobcats.

In the second game, Taylor Hulett earned the victory. Crocker suffered the loss.

Amanda Craft had a double for Dowagiac. Harper had two doubles and Sater added another double for Brandywine.

“Since that last inning against Edwardsburg we have been hitting the ball hard and we continued that tonight against Brandywine,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “We knew they were a very good hitting team and that we would have to come out swinging to try and outscore them and the girls responded.

“Brandywine’s hitters lived up to their reputation, but instead of hits, made some very loud hits. We got contributions from all 11 girls and picked up two wins for a total of 20 on the year. I am very proud of the girls for working hard and turning the program around this year.”
