Brandywine softball pitcher Kelly Harper tossed a one-hitter in game one and a no-hitter in game two Tuesday to lead the Bobcats to a sweep over Cassopolis. Brandywine won the opener, 13-3, and game two, 10-0.

Harper struck out six, hit three batters and walked two in game one. In game two, Harper struck out six, hit a batter and walked none.

“Kelly pitched her game,” said Brandywine coach Angela Mellott. “She’s a first-year pitcher. She started pitching for us in October. She’s working on hitting her spots and throwing harder. She’s trying to eliminate some of those walks and hit by pitches. She also has a great defense behind her.”

The Bobcats did their offensive damage late in game one, scoring nine runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth.

Ayralynn LaSane’s two-run single and Michaela Hartline’s RBI single ignited Brandywine in the fifth. Five of the runs were unearned in the fifth as the Rangers committed three errors.

Justine Sater collected a three-run single for the Bobcats in the sixth inning.

Makenna Hartline, Sater, LaSane and Sydney Carlson each totaled two hits for Brandywine. Logan Lawson doubled for Cassopolis.

“We just kept getting ahead of the ball,” Mellott said about her team’s slow offensive start. “We needed to get our weight back and drive through the ball instead of popping up.”

Brandywine scored in every inning but the second in game two.

Makenna Hartline had four hits and three RBIs and Harper added two hits and two RBIs. Carlson also had two hits.

“Big errors,” said Cassopolis coach Jason Schmidt. “You can’t do that against good teams like Brandywine or they’re going to make you pay and they did.

“That’s the worst we’ve swung the bat in the 12 games that we’ve played. We were flat. I was more disappointed with our play today than I had been in the past.”
